According to Kabbalah it appears that the special sense of the month of Tammuz is the sense of sight. What does this month have to do with the sense of sight? The giving of
the Torah was in the month of Sivan. Moses spent forty days on Mount Sinai, at the end of which he descended on the 17th day of Tammuz to bring to the Israelites the tablets of the covenant that he had received on Mount Sinai. What a power of light and holiness descended upon the world! The tablets illuminated the light of the Torah for all of creation! But at the same time the great fall of the sin of the golden calf occurred, and turned a day of celebration into a day of weeping.

From this day the people began a period of repentance, the end of which was only eighty days later, when Moses came down for the second time from Mount Sinai with the stone tablets, the second tablets. These are tablets of those who repent, after the great fall. And the following day, the day after Yom Kippur, the people of Israel began to build the Mishkan, the place where the divine light was illuminated into the world.

From a day of revelation, a day of seeing the divine light, the 17th day of Tammuz became as the Mishnah says (Taanit, Chapter 4, Mishna 6): the day when they stopped offering the perpetual sacrifice before the destruction, when the walls of Jerusalem were breached, a day when the destruction actually began which ended on the day of Tisha be Av, and also the day when King Menashe set up an idol in the Temple during the First Temple period. From a day of sight, this day became a day of dread. The seed of calamity that began on the 17th day of Tammuz has not yet been rectified by the day on which we must return and awaken to the fear of G-d, by yearning to reveal the light of the temple in which the light of
the Torah resided in the form of the Ark of the Covenant which served asย the continuation of the revelation at Mount Sinai.

May we merit to awaken to feel the great vacuum that exists in the world, and from this we will be able to act in a practical way for the building of the House of God, the source of light and holiness.(Rabbiย Makover)
โ€œAll who mourn [the destruction of] Jerusalem will merit to see it in its joy.โ€ (Taanit 30b)
