In the introduction to the book โNetzach Yisraelโ by the Maharal of Prague, he explains how we need to define what the victory of Israel is: โIn this composition, it will become clear that the Lord, blessed be He, gave Israel eternity (netzach), and they are not instruments of grace and peace. It will also be evident that in their harsh exile, the Lord, blessed be He, is victorious, being triumphant over the fourth kingdom which rules over themโฆโ
โNetzachโ means both eternity and victory. This is the โnetzach that the Lord, blessed be He, possessesโ, which the people of Israel inherited on the day of their birth in Egypt. Its divine essence, or in other words, the ability of Israel to contend with and prevail over all trials and the evil forces in the worldโฆโ And all of this is because it is impossible to be circumcised without conversion, and therefore it is fitting that a nation enslaved to kingdoms should have a memory of the reason for it, which is the exodus of Egyptโ. For the exodus from Egypt is the reason itself for redemption.
The wars, trials, and even the fears and doubts they arouse, all erase within us the memory of the exodus from Egypt, the memory of the first cause, as our sages say: โThe later troubles blot out the earlier onesโ (Berakhot 12b).
Nevertheless, it is precisely in the exodus from Egypt that we need to find the virtue of the victory of Israel! For the Torah teaches us that in the exile, the battle against our enemies precedes the war that we must wage against all the negative forces and qualities within us that oppose the revelation of the true good, and our perfection through the love of God and the love of our fellow humans, as it is said, โYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mightโ and โYou shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.โ
